A Fine Effort That Fits Well With the Legends Format
Tim Capps has written several of the Thoroughbred Legends books and my thoughts on his previous efforts (Spectacular Bid and Affirmed/Alydar) were that he really didn't make any effort in writing them. It just seemed like he went through magazine and newspaper articles and came up with a 175... -
Off to the Races
I am a huge fan of Secretariat and bought this little book as much to add to my shelf as anything. It is a quick read whose strength is in clearly describing the races in clear, casual prose. The author admits his prejudice in favor of Big Red and anyone who touches him, and as I too love the...

Please don't list wikipedia as your source--it will take way too much time to go that route.
After Secretariat, Affirmed has the lowest 3 combined times: 2:01 in the Derby, 1:54 2/5 in the Preakness, and 2:26 4/5 in the Belmont. I couldn't find any combined time links, but searching fastest times isn't too painful with the links below.

Secretariat won the Triple Crown in 1973 on May 5, May 19 and June 9, 1973 -- the exact dates the races are being run this year. I hope history repeats itself?! Do you? Go Street Sense!!!
I'd love to see Street Sense win the triple crown, and I have a good feeling about him today. He appears very relaxed today, which is a great sign on race day. With only 9 horses in the field, if he gets out of the gate fast, I'd try to take him wire-to-wire, away from all
A true horse legend, Secretariat still inspires new generations of fans 30 years after his incredible Triple Crown victory. This book honors the great racehorse who ran with such breathtaking speed, beauty, and power. 40 photos.

Chenery knew that Secretariat was special
In 1974, a year after the incredible Secretariat won the Triple Crown, he was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. If Big Red was now on, there would be a capacity crowd overflowing Fasig-Tipton Pavilion.
It was not the case in 1974.
"In those days it was very discreet," Penny Chenery Tweedy, Secretariat's owner, said from his home in Boulder, Colorado. "No fans ... it was just like preaching to the converted, and, PS, we need a photo. I was very proud when the Secretariat went into the Hall of Fame, but I thought it would have meant more if they had waited a long time."
Now there are five-year wait after the season last a race horse to become eligible for Hall consideration, but not at the time.
Chenery, 89, still has a passion for thoroughbred racing. Thirty-eight years later, on top of Secretariat remains about the list of all the greatest horse that ever stepped on a racetrack.

Review & Description
Penny chenery tweedy and colleagues guide her long-shot but precocious stallion to set in 1973 the unbeaten record for winning the triple crown. Studio: Buena Vista Home Video Release Date: 01/25/2011 Starring: Diane Lane John Malkovich Run time: 123 minutes Rating: PgThe "greatest racehorse of all time" mantle fits easily around the neck of Secretariat, the 1973 Triple Crown winner. So why not a movie version of this champion's life? Secretariat begins in the late '60s, with some good behind-the-scenes material on how thoroughbreds come to be (there's flavorful atmosphere inside the horsey world, including an account of Secretariat's ownership being decided by a coin flip as part of an old-school agreement)....
2011 Secretariat Stakes Preview

The Secretariat Stakes is a Grade 1 race named after the colt that I and many others consider to be the greatest horse to ever set foot on a track. The 1973 Triple Crown winner’s namesake race is for three-year-olds going 10 furlongs on the grass. Perhaps the most notable winner was Kitten’s Joy in 2004 who went on to win the Eclipse Award for U.S. Champion Male Turf Horse. Three of his sons are entered in this years running of the race.
Newsdad (Arch x Storm Tracer by Pulpit) Rallied from well back to be fourth in the Virginia Derby last out. Turf is clearly his best surface and that was the first time he had been on the weeds since March when he was third in the Palm Beach. Trainer Bill Mott throws on blinkers for this race and brings in Joel Rosario to ride. He will be live at a big price.
