Mexico's Minera Frisco 2Q Net Loss MXN372 Million
MEXICO CITY - (Dow Jones) - Mexican mining company Minera Frisco SAB (MFRISCO.MX) Wednesday a net loss in the second quarter as losses on futures contracts for metals pushed up financing costs, offsetting higher sales and operating income.
Frisco, mining billionaire Carlos Slim, said its net loss was 372 million pesos (32 million), against a net profit of MXN492 million in the second quarter of 2010.
The company said it recorded a net loss on futures contracts for metals, which, along with higher interest expense, resulted in a funding cost of MXN1.42 billion over the period.Frisco said he uses swaps, futures and options to hedge part of its future production, "mainly because of high price volatility of gold and silver, brought on largely by the devaluation and the weak dollar [U.S.]. "
Sales of Frisco in the April-June quarter rose 15% to MXN2.09 billion MXN1.82 billion, on increased production and high metal prices a year ago. Frisco produced 1.4 million ounces of silver, up 27%, and 61,846 ounces of gold, up 17% year over year. Copper and lead production has also increased, while zinc production fell.
