A: The doll in the images sent is molded, looks to be about the size of an adult hand, has painted-on Mary Jane shoes with socks plus bee-stung lips and open eyes, molded hair with a curl on the forehead, and a molded red beret or tam hat.
Rosalie Jostes, owner of Dollmenders, www.dollmenders.com , a doll hospital in Plainfield, Ill., identified the doll as Japanese-made from the late 1920s- '30s, or even later. She agrees that the doll seems to be 3 to 4 in. tall.
"Collectors like these all-bisque dolls with molded clothing or hats," she told us. Bisque is a type of unglazed porcelain. Versions with molded clothing were sold in the 1920s and bring higher prices today. Those with just molded hats came later.
Originally sold in dime stores or candy shops, the small dolls with movable arms and legs were mass made and relatively inexpensive.
