What makes some porcelain dolls expensive?
Dolled up

There are porcelain dolls being sold at a toy and gift shops here in my place, but well, they're affordable..

But don't porcelain dolls cost much? What makes those other dolls expensive?

There are 'strict rules' if you want to 'collect' as an investment. If you want to collect porcelain dolls because you love dolls, then you can put them where you want them, and can even take them out of their boxes for display.

Twickenham Doll Club hosting 35th annual Doll Show and Sale in Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA - Vicki Kendall swore she’d never enter the Valley of the Dolls.

“I started out making porcelain dolls for my daughter,” Kendall said. “She was mostly uninterested, but I got hooked.

“I swore I would never collect. Now I am eating a lot of my words.”

Twenty years later, Kendall is still eating her words and collecting dolls. She will be part of the Twickenham Doll Club’s 35th annual Doll Show and Sale Saturday to benefit First Book-North Alabama. The show is from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Huntsville Jaycees Building, 2180 Airport Road.

The show will feature antique, collectible and play dolls, as well as doll-related merchandise from all eras and from more than 40 vendors. This year’s show also features an award-winning antique reproduction dollmaker whose work has been featured on the cover of Gildebrief magazine.

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about a wide variety of dolls. The education display this year is “How They Are Made” and will showcase the inner workings and assembly practices of many types of dolls.

Dolls play a vital role in the culture of the Native American folks. Just about every tribe from every area of the world has created their own dolls, and each are made with different materials, and all have their own special meanings. Native American Dolls were not just playthings for little girls.

Oftentimes, Native American designs were symbological and held a very important religious importance. All of the materials used to make Native American dolls really speak volumes about where the numerous clans resided. For example, many Inuit dolls were made with fur, showing that they lived in cold climates, thus the doll reflected this in its dress.

Native American patterns and designs have symbological meanings. The patterns are typically repeated, representing the repetitive nature of our lives. The different designs are made from a few symbols to suggest hope and desire, to speak with the Great Spirit and to identify certain roles and responsibilities or to record stories. Though some patterns and designs differ from one clan to another, several designs and patterns have common meanings across the Native American culture.
