What you need to do is build a crankshaft, similar to a lawn mower engine crankshaft.
You need to determine how much up/ down travel you want.

After painting aluminum for 30 years, I can tell you that the only thing tougher to get paint to stick to is glass. Everything with aluminum depends on the primer. You probably can't get strontium chromate because it is carcinogenic. You will probably have to use zinc chromate.

As the Sonoma County Fair prepares to celebrate its 75th anniversary, finishing touches are being made to a museum of artifacts and photos and such dating to the earliest days of the summer exposition.
Lifelong fair enthusiast and supporter Saralee Kunde thought a perfect addition to the collection would be the fine carousel horse that the fair raffled off amid its 50th Anniversary run in 1986. So Saralee put out the call: Do you have that hand-carved Herschell Spillman horse and, if so, would you loan it to this year’s fair museum?
I mentioned the search in today’s column in the PD. Susan Cole of Santa Rosa read it, and dialed my number.
Susan said it was her mother, lifelong Santa Rosan Edna Smith, who won that carousel horse in 1986.
“That was a pretty big deal,” Susan remembered. “We were very excited.
